Project number two from the Interweave Crochet Issue of Fall 2012 is the brilliant Rockin’ Red Dress by Doris Chan! – – – which I like to call the Uhura Dress, since it was inspired by Star Trek’s Uhura Nyota.
From top to bottom it is pretty awesome! It has a beautiful V stitch pattern, that creates a V formation across the bust and neckline – which reminds of Star Trek (the Starfleet insignia + the Vulcan hand gesture), but also creates a very flattering figure. It is worked top-down in the round, seamless and with clever techniques in increasing and changing between patterns. Getting used to the main V stitch pattern needs some effort in the beginning, but after that, work is relatively easy and fast.
The yarn is DROPS Muskat, and while it evidently may have been a little bit too heavy a yarn for this dress, the sheen and color of it, makes up for everything else.
This beautiful shade of bright yellow, was chosen by one of my knitting students, as the dress was created for her. It is a color I probably would have never chosen for a large project as this, that’s why I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I would enjoy the result so much. From now on, I will be considering this color for future projects. 😉
In the modifications area, for once, I didn’t perform any. Unless lengthening the skirt a little counts as a mod. It may be an indication of how much I like this dress, that I didn’t change anything on it. But after working on it once, I think that the next time I make it (yes, I am making it for myself too!), I will be opening up the neckline a bit. I have major difficulties on deciding on a color for myself. I think I will be yarn diving for this one, but still… can’t decide. xD
Do you have any color recommendations? What kind of color would you use for a crochet dress?
